Reports To: Vice President of Advocacy

Position Summary: Ability360 is a nonprofit organization that offers and promotes programs designed to empower people with disabilities to take personal responsibility so that they may achieve or continue independent lifestyles within the community. The Public Policy Specialist supports Ability360 in establishing and developing public policy priorities and coordinates public education activities.

Required Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Master's degree in public policy, social work, or related field.
  • Knowledge of Arizona legislature and political landscape.
  • Experience in disability community advocacy and social justice work.
  • An understanding and commitment to the philosophy of Centers for Independent Living.
  • Substantial knowledge of the disability community and understanding of the advocacy priorities of the community.
  • Ability to develop allies and work collaboratively in coalitions and with partner organizations.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and oral. Ability to articulate complex policy issues clearly and respectfully to a variety of audiences.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to effectively establish and maintain professional relationships with consumers, staff, and community partners.
  • Proficient in in Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel, and various social media and list serv delivery platforms such as Mailchimp.
  • Pass Criminal Background Check
  • Access to reliable transportation and a willingness to travel.

Essential Responsibilities / Accountabilities:

  • In Coordination with the President and CEO and the Vice President of Advocacy, develop Ability360's policy program and implement initiatives to affect systems change in accordance with Ability360's mission.
  • Work with advocacy staff to monitor, track, and report on legislative activities and research policy issues.
  • Apply innovative thinking and problem-solving to policy challenges.
  • Work with the Ability360 Advocacy team to prepare and deliver written and oral testimony.
  • Contributing to research, data analyses summaries of finding and preparing policy briefs and articles.
  • Composing and publishing social media alerts and updating legislative information on the Ability360 website.
  • Create trainings and educational presentations to engage the disability community in legislative advocacy and other related topics.
  • Providing coordination and support for advocacy and community events.
  • Work with advocacy staff to coordinate turn out at legislative hearings, town halls, and other local events.
  • Represent Ability360 at various committees and community meetings that pertain to public policy or systems advocacy.
  • Attend and participate in staff and department meetings.
  • Responds to initial contacts by consumers, service providers, and community members regarding advocacy issues.

Work Environment:

Position requires local travel and work in and outside the office.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time salaried position. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
